A new idea for working with cancer by Trevor Silvester

Experiments have shown that a great deal of the sense we have of ourselves, of the feeling of the kind of person we are, is gained from our interpretation of our surroundings. If we continually find ourselves in a negative environment we tend to become the kind of person you find in such a place - which is why it's so important to pick the right friends. I always find it fascinating when there are clues that things we do appear to just be the result of evolution copying something that's been shown to work at more simple levels of life. The fact that single-cell organisms move towards reward and away from danger, and so do we, is one example, and this use of the world around us to determine our identity may be another.

Some grin and bear it; others smile and do it.

Autumn Leaves

In the autumn garden the leaves pile up, drifts of yellow, brown, green and gold. If left, they will look good for a while and then rot into a soggy, dark mass. Best to rake them up and leave the grass and flowerbeds clear of suffocating debris.

So in our lives, we need to clear away the debris, which is holding us back from growth. Some of it served a purpose once but is no use any longer ideas or attitudes which we have grown out of. Some of it is just rubbish we should have cleared out long ago old habits, the memories of things we did wrong. Raking it all away will free us to live healthier lives and let the plants in the garden put out new growth.

Getting better in your own words.

Out of the Darkness

I screamed in silence so nobody heard, too cold and frightened to utter a word

Its dark in there, I like it best, behind my door away from the rest

And now I'm out from behind the door, that kept me safe with all that I stored

Every now and then I still feel the pain, that's deep inside but will not remain

But I know, one day soon I will be free of all the pain that's inside of me

And until that day comes around for me I will hold my head up for all to see

Can't ever go back as safe as it seemed the life in the darkness and ever so clean

So hey everybody, if you see me cry in floods of tears and don't know why

Its OK I have let go of the life in the darkness on that long lonely road

So now you're asking "is this for me?" try it, find out it's amazing you'll see.

Below is a wonderful poem Audrey Hepburn wrote when asked to share her 'beauty tips.' It was read at her funeral years later.

For attractive lips, speak words of kindness.

For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people.

For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry.

For beautiful hair, let a child run his/her fingers through it once a day.

For poise, walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone.

People, even more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed, and redeemed; never throw out anyone.

Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, you will find one at the end of each of your arms.

As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands; one for helping yourself, and the other for helping others.

Have you noticed how the bad stuff is easier to believe?

How often has someone said like your top or nice haircut only for you to answer this old thing or they cut too much off but if that individual said to you what were you thinking buying that shirt or did you pay for that haircut you would most probably nod and agree or make some cynical comment.

It always seems so much easier to believe the bad stuff about ourselves, we are no good, we didn't try hard enough, or we just fail at everything.

What if for just one moment you accepted the good stuff. Just try it for a couple of hours one day, believe that you deserve to hear good things about your appearance, your work, your life. What impact that would have on you?

Then after those couple of hours you made it half a day, then a whole day, well you get the idea.

This isn't an exercise in becoming conceited but in becoming open to the positives and possibilities that surround each of us every day.
